Because of the national VIPS Program, the Fairfax County Police Department is able to broaden our base of potential volunteers not only within Northern Virginia but throughout the country by use of the VIPS Website.

Program Description

The Garden City "Special Police" program has evolved from its early years (1952) as a community civil defense group formed following WWII to first police reserves then auxiliary & today it's known as the "Special Police Unit" via a special village addendum to its charter as governed by NYS law . We routinely serve in the capacity as "Peace Officers" to assist regular police officers in there traffic, patrol,& special event duties. We serve a community of approximately 8,500 families & 347 businesses. As most of our counterparts we are all on call 24 X 7 in the event of any major incident as trained first responders. Being located just 35 miles East of NYC on Long Island many of our members assisted in the 911 WTC disaster.
