Program Description
San Antonio Police Department's Volunteers in Policing program was started in 1997 and has over 600 volunteers. Volunteer positions include: Unit Volunteer, Warrant Driver Enforcer, Citizen Observers Reducing Auto Theft, Public Safety Team participants, and Special Projects assistants. Unit Volunteer is the basic VIP assignment. These volunteers assist with clerical duties in a variety of departments including Juvenile Crime, Sex Crimes, Vehicle Crimes, Court Liaison, Public Information Office and the Office of the Deputy Chief of Patrol. Warrant Drive Enforcers research Class C Misdemeanor warrants and conduct courtesy calls to citizens to remind them of their commitment prior to officer enforcement. These volunteers are trained to work the computerized Police Warrant Tracking System. Citizen Observers Reducing Auto Theft (COBRA) volunteers are trained to conduct surveillance to prevent auto theft. Public Safety Team (PST) Volunteers focus on enforcing handicapped parking violations. Special Projects Volunteers can opt to work at special events, do role-playing for training academy scenarios or participate in a variety of community service projects.
