VIPS: Volunteers in Police Service
  How Do I Start?

In 2002, President Bush called on all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves. One way to become involved in the President’s Call to Service is to volunteer with a law enforcement agency in your community.

Find a Program

If you are interested in serving your community by volunteering with a law enforcement agency, you can search the VIPS directory to find a program near you! Each program determines what volunteer opportunities are available and how to apply. Reach out to the contact listed on their Web page for more information.

If there is not a program listed near you, contact your local law enforcement agency to find out if they have a volunteer program. If they do not, you can request our materials to share with your local law enforcement agency.

Volunteer Activities

VIPS volunteers are engaged in many different activities. When you apply, you will be screened and interviewed by the agency to determine your skills and interests. A volunteer coordinator will then try to match you with an appropriate volunteer opportunity.

Record of Service

A Record of Service is a private journal of your volunteer time and experiences. Your volunteer time may make you eligible to receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

President’s Volunteer Service Award

The President's Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain number of volunteer hours served over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime. Local VIPS programs are eligible to verify, nominate, and distribute the President’s Volunteer Service Awards by becoming certifying organizations.
